Periodontal Curettage

Treating gum disease in depth

Healthy gums play a fundamental role in the stability and longevity of teeth. When they are affected by chronic inflammation, this is referred to as periodontal disease. If this condition progresses without treatment, it can lead to bone loss, tooth mobility, and even tooth loss.

At Dr. Mariona Palé's dental clinic, we offer periodontal curettage when preventive care is no longer sufficient to control inflammation. This deep treatment aims to stabilize the situation, promote tissue healing, and prevent long-term complications.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease, or periodontitis, is a chronic infection of the tissues that support the teeth: gums, ligaments, and alveolar bone. It often begins with gingivitis, which causes bleeding when brushing, before progressing to a more advanced form if left untreated.

Warning signs to look out for:

  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums;
  • Persistent bad breath;
  • Feeling that your teeth are loose;
  • Gum recession (teeth appear longer);
  • Diffuse pain or discomfort when chewing.

What does periodontal curettage involve?

When periodontal pockets form (areas where the gum detaches from the tooth), deep cleaning becomes necessary. Periodontal curettage involves:

  • Removing bacterial plaque and tartar below the gum line.
  • Cleaning and smoothing the surface of the roots (root planing).
  • Disinfecting the area to limit bacterial growth.
  • Promoting the reattachment of gum tissue to the tooth.

This procedure is performed under local anesthesia, quadrant by quadrant, in one or more sessions depending on the extent of the disease. The treatment is often supplemented by personalized hygiene instructions and close follow-up.

A personalized and progressive approach

Before proceeding with curettage, we perform a complete periodontal assessment, including digital X-rays to evaluate bone loss and pocket depth. This accurate diagnosis allows us to determine the severity of periodontitis and choose the most appropriate treatment.

In advanced cases, additional treatments may be offered, such as local antibiotics, antiseptic irrigations, or even periodontal surgery to regenerate tissue.

Tarifs et assurances : ce qu’il faut savoir

Periodontal curettage is an essential step in controlling the disease, stopping its progression, and avoiding irreversible consequences. If performed in time, it can often save the affected teeth and significantly improve gum health.
